Camp Dodge Desolation Marks End Of An Era
The last frame buildings at Camp Dodge have been torn down leaving two brick warehouses as remnants. Government spending of about 9 million dollars created a vast encampment once hosting 45,000 to 60,000 soldiers. 2,100 acres were leased for farming, then reverted. Hospital land became oat fields, a former community center site now a corn field, and other facilities vanished. The state owns 575 acres at the south end for future permanent shelters and 650 acres for a rifle range. Access to Camp Dodge is forbidden, and future generations will not grasp its former scale.

Woman Recalls Rescue. Seattle Lumberman Gifts $1000
Mrs Am elia Ransom of Sioux City recalls saving a child from a runaway team years ago. A well dressed middle aged woman later visited and presented her with a $1000 check, asking that the act be publicized if she ever needed help. The donor is Mrs James Keller, wife of a Seattle lumber man. In Iowa City a similar tale involves Mrs Mary Pardue who rescued the three year old son of Mrs Anna Beranek. Pardue was injured in the attempt and Beranek, now widowed and ill, moved to California after gifting Pardue a luxury automobile. Des Moines city employees receive wage increases from 10 to 25 percent aligning with craft pay. New hourly rates for skilled trades set by the Trades and Labor assembly reflect eight hour days.
