County Extension Director M A Balkema notes that delaying flax sowing past April 10 reduces harvest yields by about a peck per acre. Tests at Ames and Kanawha show a 5-bushel drop if planting is late, due to heat during seed setting and weed competition varying by species. Early planting promotes bloom before mid July heat but struggles against certain weeds.
