Fresh Water Mussels and Pearl Button Industry Growth

The Department of Commerce and Bureau of Fisheries announce expanded focus on fresh water mussel beds across the Mississippi basin and Great Lakes drainage. Government propagation efforts, including rescue operations in 1922, aim to ensure a stable mussel supply for billions of buttons and thousands of workers, anchored by Muscatine Iowa as a historic headquarters. Also guidance on baby chick care from extension service urges early feeding, litter cleanliness, and stage-based rations for optimal growth.

Pearl fisheries form unique industry in Mississippi valley

The pearl fisheries in the United States are creating new jobs for women. About eight thousand women work in fresh water mussel processing along the Mississippi valley rivers, sorting shells, cooking mussel meats, and preparing pearl buttons. Muscatine, established in 1891 as the first button factory hub, remains the industry's headquarters with women handling grinding, shell trimming, and operating automatic machines. Home-based work allows hundreds of women to place buttons on boards, while sorting and grading remains a distinctly female occupation.
