Cost of Production Plus in Farm Costs Debate

Militant farm leaders push for guaranteed cost plus profit, but critics argue efficient production differs from mere production. A federal dairying report shows cows producing butterfat at 20 to 42 cents feed per pound, while wheat can cost 60 cents a bushel with machinery or over $2 in higher-value land. Cotton profits vary from 6 to 15 cents per pound. 4-H hog and corn benchmarks show wide cost ranges, prompting questions about guaranteed profits and which farmers would benefit or lose. The piece concludes farming is a business bound by strict rules and hard facts, not rhetoric.
