Reading and Writing by Edwin Leavessw Robin Miroun
This year’s winner is Gladys Schmitt for her 700 page novel The Gates of Aulis. She lives on Long Island near New York and recently left Scholastic Magazine’s editorial staff to finish the work. The book follows brother and sister Carl and Ellie Hasselmann in a Pittsburgh like town, with Ellie an artist and Paul a sociology teacher, each seeing the world differently yet sharing deep understanding. Ellie's line that they both see in the other the repressed side of themselves guides their bond. The author draws on their childhood and adolescence to complete portraits of their characters. Schmitt plans a new Pittsburgh based novel about King David.
