Attack of Variegated Cutworms Threaten Iowa Cornfields
Reports from the Iowa State Agricultural Experiment Station in Ames warn that variegated cutworms, now widespread across western Iowa and southern counties, threaten corn and clover alfalfa fields. Entomologist Fred A. Fenton notes caterpillars attack clover and alfalfa then corn, advising poison mash or bran bait for small areas and Bordeaux mixture with arsenate for leafhoppers, which cause yellowing leaves. Two broods of leafhoppers occur in June–July and August–September, underscoring the need to treat undersides of leaves with spray material.

Spray for Potato Bugs and Leaf Hoppers
Entomologists at Iowa State College say potato bugs and leaf hoppers are very numerous this spring and can be controlled by spraying with Paris green or lead arsenate. Lead arsenate is the best spray for potato bugs, also called Colorado beetles, as it does not injure leaves and is more effective. In last summer’s 12 field tests lead arsenate gave strong results.

Sweet Cream Pays the Best for Farmers
M Mortensen head of the dairy department at Iowa State College says sweet cream is worth more than ordinary butter. Farmers can gain several cents more per pound of butterfat by producing sweet cream and careful handling can keep cream sweet for two or three days. He cautions against listening to home creamery operators who claim sour cream can match sweet cream in butter quality and price. Observing the New York market shows the price difference in sweet versus sour cream and the extra work required is minimal for the higher returns.
