Des Moines women demand a female business manager for the Mitchellville state industrial school for girls. The institution, long led by men, has seen reforms under Fitzgerald with cottages led by matrons and women in charge of departments. Free Bridge Question Becomes Iowa Case at ICC
Attorney General H W Byers argued before the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington on behalf of the Iowa Board of Railroad Commissioners in a suit against Dunleith and Dubuque Bridge Co and several railroads. The case questions making the bridge at Dubuque free and open. Iowa contends the bridge is owned by the Illinois Central Railway Company in effect since it owns all stock in the bridge company. Byers showed the bridge cost about 92771 000 over 40 years, with 8 million in tolls collected from shippers and travelers, and urged the ICC to reduce or abolish the bridge tolls.
