Sudan grass offers five strong advantages for hay
An Iowa State College report highlights Sudan grass as a reliable hay crop with high yields, low seed cost, easy establishment, late-season seeding, and good drought tolerance. Average yield at the Iowa station is 3.47 tons per acre from two cuttings, with highs to 9.5 tons and lows near 2.2 tons. It can be broadcast and harrowed for best results and has performed well over eight years of observation. Cow peas are not suitable for Iowa, and soybeans outperform them as hay crops.
