Increase in railway shopmen pay ordered by McAdoo
Direct General McAdoo raised shopmen wages to 68 cents an hour with proportional boosts for assistants and other mechanics. The pay hike covers about 600000 workers nationwide, effective August 1, plus time and a half for overtime and Sundays. Back pay will be issued as calculations allow, and the total added pay is near 100 million dollars. The measure follows the commission on railroad wages and conditions and aims to end discrimination against railroad workers in shipyards.
