General Eddy Leads Ninth Division Frontline Tours in Normandy
Ernie Pyle profiles Maj. Gen. Manton Eddy commander of the Ninth Infantry Division, praising his honesty approachability and front line presence in France. The piece recalls Eddy’s Tunisia and Sicily service, his love of Chicago home, and his habit of visiting troops at dawn then sharing stories and humor to lift morale. It also recounts Eddy’s camp routine, a night patrol aboard an unarmed jeep, and a famous anecdote of aiding a soldier in a rain soaked bivouac during Africa. The narrative closes with broader notes on the Ninth’s extensive combat sequence from Africa to Cherbourg.
