Fall plowing guidelines for alfalfa and wheat crops
Iowa State College soil expert L. W. Forman recommends fall plowing after grain harvest with three follow up steps: conserve moisture kill weeds and firm the seedbed. Discing every 10 days helps moisture retention and weed control. Rolling depends on soil type and seasonal conditions. Heavy soils benefit from fall plowing to use freeze thaw action while light soils are often better suited to spring plowing.

Manure Boosts Clover Yield at Iowa Experiment Farm
Large manure applications markedly increased red clover yields in four year plots at the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station. Best results came with 20 tons of manure plus limestone, about 5000 pounds per acre, while control plots averaged 2600 pounds. Economical rates suggested 8–12 tons manure. Cutting Stimulates Pasture Weeds and Season Length
Iowa State College dairy expert A C McCandlish urges mowing pastures to cut tops of tall weeds and rough grass before seeding. This practice helps drive out iron weed seeds and stimulates new grass for fall use. McCandlish reports years of satisfactory results at the college dairy farm. Wider campaigns for good roads reference a bulletin on Good Roads and Community Life by Brifdley and Doods of ISU.
