The column jests at wartime rumors and social quirks with satirical riffs on speed, agriculture, fashion, and public life. It parodies city versus country living, hotel meals, and male domestic roles amid wartime sentiment with humorous vignettes and tongue in cheek quips.
Spirit Lake area notes and local notices from 1897
Taken from the Republican files a busy local page records a sequence of travel plans births and visits. Wilbur Hemphill and family depart for Rudd to aid an ill mother while M M Knapp and daughter head to Detroit for a Republican League convention. Several others travel east to Toronto Niagara Falls Bay towns and Washington. Births include six or more babies with dates and parents named. Community events feature Epworth League in Toronto and a Cherry Sisters engagement, plus local bicycle races and chautauqua attendance. A lengthy editorial on editors and newspapers critiqued media interests and public opinion. A Riverside item notes a seven room rental at Ralph ice cream parlors.
