No Iowa gold mine declared by scientist
AMES IOWA July 14 In spite of reports that gold would be found in Iowa there will be no rush to mine here says A K Smedrick associate professor of mining at Iowa State College. Professor Friedrich notes glacial gravels may contain trace gold but paying quantities are unlikely. Of nine samples only two contained gold with two hundredths of an ounce per ton in one case and a tiny amount in another. Pyrite and yellow mica are often mistaken for gold. pyrite burns when heated while gold does not.

The 42 Gallon Barrel Standard in Oil History
Oil discovery in Pennsylvania led to using mixed wine barrels as containers. Frauds arose from thick staves reducing actual contents. In 1864 65 Samuel Van Syckla created a true 42 gallon barrel with fixed stave size, gaining monopoly and standardizing barrels. Gauging tanks began in 1865 with Hammond’s table for oil per inch, a method still used.

Rag figures revive old craft in modern fashion
The Christian Science Monitor notes a trend reviving past crafts such as woolwork screens and paper flowers as quaint, now popular again. Mme Volkoff, once Princess Troubetzkoy of the Russian court, in Petrograd, created feather pictures and rag figures to aid Russian troops. Since moving to Brigyl she models small statuettes of famous people in distinctive poses, using scraps of rag to form lifelike figures that rival paper models and wax groups of earlier eras.
