Army Worms Haunt Farms West Of Town Across Roads
In a Saturday report, Walter Deering’s cattle area revealed inch long red marked army worms on his car and, later, on soybeans. County Agent Simpson and Lakefield colleagues confirmed the pest, prompting a control plan with a poisoned bran and sawdust mix. Fields show extensive damage to rye, with potential yield cuts from 40 to near 10 bushels per acre. Worms linger in damp, manure rich bottomlands, and eggs hatch into a flying stage. Nearby farms including Pred Berberness and a Jackson county border area report rye and corn damage, while alfalfa remains largely safe. Next week rye harvests loom as burning straw aims to kill eggs.
