Hemp as Eradicator of Quack Grass Trials in Iowa
The growing hemp crop may offer a solution to quack grass in Iowa. F. G. Churchill notes Mitchell county had quack grass infestation on a farm that was seeded to hemp. the following year corn was planted and the quack largely disappeared. About 100 acres of hemp are grown in the county this year. Hemp thrives, reaching four to five feet by late June, sown in drills or broadcast. Marketing hemp requires proximity to a factory using the material. Churchill sees potential as an weed eradicator where markets exist, though trials are limited.

Bites Stop Sweet Clover Bloat on Iowa Pasture
R W Engstrom of Madrid faced cattle bloating on sweet clover pasture. Extension expert F G Churchill advised cutting the pasture to eight inches, supplying salt and lime, and moving cattle to other feed if bloating began. Following the plan, Engstrom reported no further bloat, with cut stubble reducing greedy grazing.

Red Clover Seed Setting Declares Home-Grown Best
Iowa State College extension specialist F C Churchill says a major portion of this year’s red clover crop in Iowa is setting seed and may be saved for seed only if heads average at least 250 seeds each and the stand is good. Home grown seed performs better than foreign seed, which has risks of weeds and winter failure. Iowa’s dairy sector shows high cow testing with Iowa ranked fifth in cows and cows tested among U S states.
