New rust resistant oats require moisture checks before binning
Old oat types were light and low yielding and rust prone. New rust resistant oats pull sap to heads and must be drier than old varieties to pack and store safely. Tests at the elevator or AAA office determine when moisture is under 14 percent before binning large amounts. Windrowing and combining with a pickup are best. binders require yellow dry stems after 4 days to a week.
