Des Moines Starts 1933 Session with Tax Cut Battles
Des Moines lawmakers return to work after inauguration to face 72 tax reduction measures and three joint resolutions. Key committees named in both houses, with Maniece and Patterson leading panels. Supreme Court salary ruling adds payroll uncertainty, while a proposed bill would delay delinquent tax sales to every fourth year, unsettling counties facing unpaid taxes.
Law Reforms Aim to Legalize County Road Levies
A bill before the General Assembly would legalize the fifty county boards' past mandatory road levies and allow rescission where levies were made. Tax refunds are ordered for taxes collected before the law takes effect. Counties may use gas tax funds for maintenance to avoid new levies. Senate action seeks debt settlement talks, while House races on contested seats proceed. A House bill cuts gopher bounty from 10c to 5c, with relief committees formed to handle emergency measures and reduce mortgage security burdens.
