Federal taxes rise as war drives revenue and costs
1941 fiscal year sees federal tax bill more than double prior years amid defense needs. Roosevelt signs expansive revenue act to raise 3 to 4 billion dollars while deficits grow. State and local tax collections hit new highs, with New York cutting its budget and reforms saving millions. Projections foresee higher taxes in 1942 to fund war and lending, alongside efforts to curb nondefense expenditures.
