The Mastery of Great Populations by A W Baird

The article traces ancient rulers using force to control populations, then notes a shift to money as the dominant modern power. It argues that finance governs civilization beyond the value of land and mortgage security, with farmers increasingly losing their land as a foreseen outcome prompts search for solutions.

Forms of voiced discontent echo in political correspondence

A letter laments poverty and rural hardship amid alleged government neglect. It argues for a strong honest legislature to curb corporate landholding and protect farmers, criticizing moneyed interests and speculating on corn prices amid an unsettled growing season. It also notes local social visits.
