Preparedness Drive Shapes Wartime Debate Across Generations
Charles P. Stewart reviews early 20th century pacifist and prowar arguments as America debates preparedness and readiness. He recalls the Oscar II voyage in 1915, the split among peace advocates, and how preparedness rhetoric foreshadowed U.S. entry into war. He notes leaders like Pittman May Walsh Vinson and the tension between defensive versus aggressive strength. The piece contrasts pacifist caution with expansion of military, naval, and air forces and warns against misreading strength as a guarantee of peace.
