Value of Home Canned Meat

Margarette Pfeil urges farm families to can meat this winter to boost supplies and save money as prices rise next spring. A 700 to 800 pound cow yields 150 to 200 pounds of boneless canned beef at 1.5 to 2 cents per pound cost, with retail replacement around 15 cents. Canned meat can replace steaks, chops, and ground beef in recipes, reducing living costs and aiding cattle surplus reduction.

That's Gold in That Creek No Foolin

The John Kroupa family of Des Moines township believes Uncle Sam left the gold standard too soon for gains. Mrs. Kroupa, while dressing a duck for dinner, found a pea sized nugget in the gizzard. A local jeweler said it resembled gold, suggesting the fowl swam or scraped it from near the water. The family lives near a small stream the poultry crosses.

Grass holds the land against erosion and pays better

Officials warn that telling people to stop soil erosion is useless without methods. Buffalo grass roots make soil porous and absorb water, while wind and water erosion decline with grass stands. Grass can cut topsoil loss on slopes, improve runoff, and yield profits, per suggestions from readers and the American Game Association.

Not Raising Hogs Could Bring Greater Profits, Says Harold Truman

In a letter to a friend, Harold Truman argues that the man who earned a thousand dollars by not raising hogs shows higher potential profits from not raising stock. Prairie chicken flocks observed across Iowa and nesting hopes

The Iowa Fish and Game Commission reports many pheasant hunters saw prairie chickens in north and western Iowa. Regular wintering flocks from Minnesota and the Dakotas appeared in October, with nesting birds found in Clayton, Wayne and Lyon counties. A large flock near Round Lake in Clay County numbered about two hundred. The breeding colonies are scattered and small, and officials expect more winter migrants to nest as a result of the waterfowl restoration program.
