Still Thinks Iowa Is Best Farming State
Babson Park Florida February 7 Weather remains pleasant as a north cold snap spares South Florida. Herbert and I rode with R W Duncan along road No 8 toward Kissemmee River near Palm Beach. Lands yield dark loam soil, fertile and well drained, with sparse market land. We saw celery harvests, rickety prairie westward, and a rising Lake Stearns, promising future growth as cattlemen fence off prairie and push no-fence reforms. The Arcadia route crossed a desolate plain with wrecked WWI Dorr Field hangars and palmetto growth. Road No 8 paving is funded but rough and crooked. Our eastward trip covered 30 miles equating to 150 in feel, ending near Arcadia then back via Brownsville and Wauchula to Frostproof.
