Feed hay to brood sows improves pig growth and cost
Experiments at the Agricultural Experiment Station show hay fed sows produce lighter initial births but pigs reach heavier birth weights and grow cheaper overall. Pigs from hay fed sows averaged 2.29 pounds at birth versus 1.74 pounds with corn risks, and costs drop from 41 to 26 cents per pig. Hay rations with corn, grain and alfalfa are recommended, hay can be self fed or ground.
