Alsike Clover Substitutes For Red Clover In Pasture Mixes
Alsike clover seeds more economically this spring than red or mammoth clover. One third Tess seed per acre saves about 20 cents per pound compared with red clover, with high nutritive value and good hardiness. It performs well on flat or poorly drained land, though hay yields may be a bit lower and root systems shallower. Mixing alsike with other clovers or grasses yields the greatest returns, with suggested seedings of 4 pounds alsike and 9 pounds timothy per acre or 2 pounds alsike, 4 pounds red, and 7 to 9 pounds timothy for favorable conditions.
