The Elks lodge plans a new home costing about 35000 dollars. Stock sales have raised around 20000 dollars, allowing plans and preliminary steps to begin as spring opens. The stock company will build east of the government post office, under lodge supervision, on a desirable, fire-isolated site.
The paper emphatically denies rumors of local press opposition to Mr King and his theater plans. It states it remains a friend to Mr and Mrs King and supports fair consideration of the project despite possible public reluctance.
The final M. & St. L. train reached town Tuesday January 80th before the first blizzard. No trains will reach here today February Tth as a treaty says, but the line is expected to clear tomorrow. A snow plow began from Winthrop Friday and reached near Huntington where it derailed and remains stalled awaiting assistance from another plow.
Des Moines reports a winter week from February 4 1917 with generally fair skies and below normal temperatures except for possible snow midweek. In Estherville high school basketball, Estherville defeated Graettinger 48 to 17, freshmen beating eighth graders 17 to 2, eighth graders showing promise for future seasons.
H T Nichols writes from Florida dated January 30 describing managing a clearing and development project on Paxon and Hough land west of Arcadia. He details plowing teams, lime hauling from Pine Level, plans to attend Gasparilla in Tampa, and arrivals of buyers from Minnesota and the Dakotas. He notes others fencing and clearing acreage for future homes, artesian wells, and a forthcoming drainage district to boost property values.
The proposition for a consolidated school at Huntington was defeated last Friday by a large majority. Farmers opposed it, enduring cold weather to reach the polling place and cast negative votes.
The secretary’s annual Ringsted Creamery report shows 1916 receipts from butter, cream and buttermilk totaling 59334.88 dollars. The average butter price was 36.83 cents, indicating a very satisfactory year. The creamery remains in a very prosperous condition.
J B Anderson visited Estherville to oversee hay on a half section owned with Geo Gardner. A hired worker cut and stored the crop, then sold his half and mortgaged the other half. Anderson acted to reprieve the hay on their property.
Reports to the Iowa auditor show tax hikes across nearly every county with an average rise near 30,000 dollars per county. Local taxes bear the burden as state tax cuts from two years ago are not repeated. Total town taxes paid in 1916 reached 50 million dollars. 1917 estimates place increases between two and three million. The final figures will be presented to the legislature.
A brutal cold spell plus blizzard shut down rail service and mail for days. Temperatures sank to 32 below zero, trains were annulled, and towns like Estherville faced power outages and drifting snow. Hotels overflowed with stormbound travelers as crews battled to reopen routes.
The mayor refuses to call a vote on selling the electric light plant citing lack of authority and withdrawal of petition names. Chicago bidders, Elston and Company, will review action with their firm, insisting a public vote is the fair approach. If a new petition is secured, a special election may be sought. otherwise the matter may lapse until the council opts to submit to the people.
Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Stone appear unhappy with Nara Visa New Mexico. Mrs. Stone and the children returned to Estherville. Mr. Stone plans to return in summer after completing final proof entry on a government land tract near Estherville. The family had moved there two years ago.
Dr Ivey now occupies a fine suite in the new block over Sconberg Kilgore department store and offers modern equipment in a well appointed dental parlor. He invites old and new patients to visit.
A major blizzard snarled rail traffic for a week, with snow plows clearing routes on the Rock Island and M and St L lines. Passenger trains began operating again on the C R P and Estherville regained outside communication after seventy two hours of isolation. Weather stayed bitterly cold around eight below zero as winds shifted, renewing the blockade.

A circulated report claimed Ringling Brothers sold Ringling circus to Gollnar Brothers. Charles Ringling in Chicago writes that the story is false and without foundation. Ringling Brothers say they have no sale plans and will operate the circus as usual.
Pitcher Arthur sale set for February 13 on the Armstrong road six miles east of Extherville. Full particulars appear in a half page advertisement in this issue, attention of the public is called.
Commercial Club committee members J. W. Morse Geo Shadle George Ly ons and A. O. Peterson spent two days soliciting funds for the theater opening. Reporters noted strong canvassing and optimism that the required amount will be raised after a meeting to report results to Mr. Granf.
Mrs Alfred Rhodes and Mrs Geo Growell hosted Friday afternoon for Mrs C R Holsein and Mrs Frazier. Mrs Walter Crowell hosted bridge Saturday. The Women’s Club met at Mrs J S Clinite’s home with leaders Mrs Cleve Moore and Mrs Jol Smith Monday. Gardston Hotel hosted a dancing party Friday night for numerous young people and guests. Mr and Mrs John Kirby gave a six o clock dinner Thursday evening for friends.
Chas Rhinehart returned Saturday from Ottawa Illinois where he visited Mr Duffy who recently suffered a stroke of paralysis. He reports Mr Duffy a very little improved but as yet very weak and his mind is badly affected. He is in the hospital and is being given the very best of medical care and careful nursing.
An Estherville theater owner argues two modern cinemas are desirable and needed for the town’s welfare. He notes other towns of similar size sustain multiple houses and promises six percent return with competitive, open business practice. He urges broader local development and competition, pledging a larger, safer, attractive structure if given support.
