Florida Winter Freeze Impacts Citrus Crops in Babson Park Area

A Florida frost of December 1984 trimmed citrus output across the southern peninsula. Florida’s fruit industry faces heavy losses with orange 50 percent, tangerines 80 to 90 percent, grapefruit 25 percent, while dread thins the crop further by ten to fifteen. The statewide estimate drops from 30 million to about 14 million boxes. Despite losses, insect pests were also reduced, and a long historical look cites notable freezes since 1776. 1,800 cars of fruit were shipped north before inspectors halted frozen fruit. The piece notes economic shifts, including higher prices and potential profits for remaining fruit, plus societal commentary on politics, radio celebrity Kate Smith, and licensing themes.
