Graduation Banquet and Exercises At Estherville College
The Estherville Commercial College held a 6:30 banquet at Od Fellows hall with citizens attending. Rhodes served as toastmaster while toasts by AC Brown Miss Ida Davis and others praised the school and city relation. Graduation followed with diplomas, class prophecy, and solos drawing applause. Mrs Herzberg expressed encouragement and plans to build a premier local college.

Sugar beet meeting at court house to discuss plant option
A meeting is planned for Thursday afternoon next week January 4 at 2 o clock at the court house to discuss the sugar beet proposition. Representatives from sugar beet factories and farmers from Ottosen who have grown beets the past two years will share profits insights. Farmers are urged to attend to indicate willingness to plant sufficient acreage and potentially establish a factory in Estherville.

Estherville Growth Noted With Public Works and Prosperity
Estherville shows substantial improvements including a Carnegie Library a $65 000 post office building and an elegant depot. Plans for a $50 000 hotel a new high school opera house and many new dwellings are contemplated. Five banks hold about $1 600 000 in deposits a sign of prosperity. The city hosts a municipal water and light system a volunteer fire department three newspapers a good sewer system five hotels and several factories. Estherville sits as a railroad division point with a monthly payroll around $40 000. The writer commends local boosters and notes crops in decline due to a June dry spell but corn yields strong. Land in Emmet county remains fertile and values are rising with farms offered at $76 to $100 per acre. A subscription promotion for The Register and Leader runs through Feb 1 1918. Also notices about a Lost ten dollar bill and a found fur muff appear, plus a note on the Lyric hosting “the worlds principal events” Fridays.
