Pioneers Used Covered Wagon to Estherville in 1878
Florence Herbrandson of Estherville recalls 1878 pioneer travel from St Paul to Windom Minnesota by wagon. They crossed rivers at shallow spots and slept in wagons beside streams. Estherville had fifteen houses, three stores, a wooden bridge over the Des Moines river, no rails, and a one‑room school. The town featured a grist mill, duck ponds on Fifth Street, and early landowners were nonresidents. The Emmet county seat moved from Swan Lake to Estherville.
