Devastating Estherville Fire Claims Norby At Tosdal Building
A catastrophic blaze Tuesday at the Tosdal, Cayin and Bixby buildings on Lincoln and Seventh streets destroyed the structures and cost Charles Norby his life. Fire officials said gas ignition likely caused the explosion in the Self Serve Grocery basement, trapping Norby and others. Firefighters and witnesses recounted a brutal sequence as Chief Norby’s associates aided in escape. Norby’s body was found late afternoon at the rear store area, burned and drenched in kerosene oil from a ruptured barrel. The blaze spread to neighboring shops including Brenner jewelry, Furnishings, and Groves block, with substantial losses across multiple tenants and a total estimated damage near fifty thousand dollars.
