First Pheasant Planting Accidentally Began Iowa History

A historic note from Iowa's game survey by Aldo Leopold recounts the first pheasant planting. An English farmer William Benton near Cedar Falls started raising pheasants around 1899 and a severe storm in 1900 or 1901 released about 2000 birds, aided by vandals. The tale places this accidental release among Iowa's largest plantings, with a rival report of a 2600-bird release in Pilot Knob State Park. Mussolini is said to be buying U.S. mules, setting up a potential clash with Haile Selassie’s Ethiopian forces. Graham McNamee would describe the ensuing conflict.
