Early days of Armstrong settlement in Estherville area
In 1871 Edward Vandinburgh Armstrong recounts how his grandparents left Janesville Wisconsin for Nebraska, stopping in Emmet county. Three families homesteaded on Armstrong Grove township sections six and seven near Campbell’s farm. They built a 16 by 12 foot unplastered house, slept in a wagon, and faced severe winters with minimal shelter. Men cleared land with oxen, earned money in Minnesota, and relied on Estherville and Algona for mail and supply routes. A scare of potential Native American activity ended when the lone boy observer confirmed no immediate threat.
