Iowa Steeplejack Heroine and Other Rural Tales
Ottumwa readers recall Mrs. H. H. Smooth of Burlington, a steeple jack who painted a 145 foot power plant smokestack with her husband, noted for climbing many flagpoles. Also, James Degera of Gladbrook shot a gray eagle mistaken for a wolf, later mounted for the state university. Fifty years ago, fifteen young married men left Clayton county in ox-teams seeking homesteads in Cherokee county, forming a tiny prairie colony later commemorated by John Potter and C. A. Styles as the original group faded away.
