Former Chief Dispatcher on Rock Island Dies
Rufus Edward Merrill, chief dispatcher on the Dakota Division at Estherville from 1902 to 1907, died in Moberly Missouri August 8. Born November 27, 1877 in West Branch Iowa, he lived a long railroad career with multiple positions before ending as night chief dispatcher. He was a Mason and active in fraternal orders, survived by his wife Mabel Palmer two children three sisters and other relatives. Funeral services were held at Fourth Street M E church with Masonic rites at Oakland cemetery.

Jackson County Fair Opens with Fireworks and Free Attractions
The eighth annual Jackson County Fair nears with Sept 2 3 and 4 dates. N R Wallin crews build a new cattle barn. Secretary H L Strom promises the best fireworks display commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Free attractions include Farmer Burns and his Pigs, Gypsy Strollers, Roy Thomas Trio, and Chief Zat Zam. Lakefield Day is Sept 8 with the Lakefield band. Heron Lake band plays Saturday. Harness racing is replaced by free for alls and various running races Friday and Saturday.
