Why have Iowa farms turned to a man made Hell

A. W. Baird reflects on two Iowa farms seen in a prior week. One 146 acres bought in 1899 with a thriving home and contented family contrasts with a 1000 acre farm bought in 1871 for six dollars per acre where debt grew, parents aged and injured, and children grown distant. He laments farms drifting from care to ruin and asks why Iowa’s paradise becomes hell.
