Iowa corn crop forecast by weather bureau for August

Iowa farmers may harvest a record corn crop if favorable weather continues, with Director John R. Sage estimating as high as 390,000,000 bushels under optimistic conditions and about 320,000,000 to 340,000,000 bushels on average. The report notes late planting and regional variation, with current yields around 32 bushels per acre typical, and last year at 31. The 9,000,000 acres expected would yield 88 percent of a full crop if realized.

The Rosebud opening a big game of chance in settlement

The Rosebud Reservation opening to settlement by Uncle Sam has proved a big game of chance from the start. Locators charged up to 25 for trips and notes, often guiding buyers to poor lands while better plots remained. Some firms did fair work, notably Rathman Keller and Orion Porter, but many faced crowds and rushed filings. Crops show promise in Gregory county, though water is scarce and conditions vary, leaving some settlers hopeful while others face disappointment and relinquishments.
