Automatic stokers on railroads face mixed results
In the United States several automatic stokers have been trialed with limited success. Two main types exist the overfeed and the underfeed. The first developed has seen wide testing while the underfeed shows promise. The Chesapeake & Ohio built the first unit about a dozen years ago and it evolved from hand firing to steam motor. Today 22 locomotives on the Chicago Burling ton & Quincy and two on the Iowa Central use automatic stokers. On a Burling ton trip a stoked locomotive hauled 600 tons more than rated at 17 1 2 mph with steady steam pressure and little fire cleaning needed. D F Crawford proposes an underfeed stoker designed to run the locomotive for all tasks without smoke. Continuous operation and integration into the locomotive are key goals.
