In the Trenches with Old Pepper and a Battery D Soldier
A WWI diary extract recalls life in France with Battery D238. The author describes dugout life near an observation post, the first to arrive placing a sign, and interactions with Bombardier Wilson. They recount trench hardships, counterbattery duels, deathly ditches, and a pair of soldiers who plotted a risky ruse to outwit command in obedience to Old Pepper.
