Arm strong club backs black top for No 44 to state line
A committee from the Arm strong Community club met with the highway commission in Ames to press surfacing No 44 to the state line. The commission promised to black top the road by early summer after noting they cannot supply paving for at least five years. They will use a 77 inch sub base rather than the standard 6 inch and gravel shoulders as recommended. They cited 24 hour vehicle counts of 687 with 66 trucks and buses. If paving wait remains, road will be gravelled to the state line with paving deferred indefinitely. Grading is ongoing and weather permitting the last stretch will be finished soon.

Iowa Airports Not Listed for 1942 Defense Program
Gil Robb Wilson, head of the National Aeronautic Association, told a House subcommittee the 1942 Commerce Department appropriation bill should include 1 500 class two airports to serve cities like Cedar Rapids and Des Moines. He noted 4 000 airports of all types nationwide but Iowa received no airport projects in the 1942 list under the 250 airport national defense program. The CAA plans include three ultra high frequency fan marker devices at Des Moines for traffic control and instrument approaches, and Montezuma would see boundary lighting adjustments at its air field.
