Pioneer Story of early Estherville founder Walt Lucas
Funeral services were held for Walter Lucas at the Baptist church with Rev. Riggs officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill cemetery. Lucas, the county’s oldest settler, shared memories of 1862 arrivals, log shacks, blacksmith father, a famine year, river Indians, and prairie life, recalling fish diets, barter economy, school terms, and trains shaping the town’s growth. His grandsons served as pallbearers.
