Million Miles Logged In May In SACOG May Is Bike Month
The Sacramento region logged 1,288,676 bicycle miles in May as 7,266 people signed up online to track their rides. Since 2005 the campaign has urged residents to reach one million miles, recognizing five standout individuals and employers for integrating cycling into daily life and improving options regionwide. Mercy General Hospital was named Bike-Friendly Employer of the Year for its Commuter Options Program, which reduced 5,600 commutes and 48,000 bicycle miles in 2008, and includes a free on-site bicycle shop and a weekend Cycling Club. Other honorees include El Dorado County officials for advocacy, Ron Kampling for workplace cycling leadership, Corey Harkins for youth cycling advocacy, and Ed Cox for 15 years of bicycle valet service serving 5,000+ bicycles annually at 30 events.
