Fall rain totaling about two inches over two weeks aids cotton crops in the county. While some bolls were damaged, moisture slows further opening and may raise yields by fifty to one hundred percent. Farmers report easy hiring at one dollar per hundred for picking as the area faces bollworm effects and regional crop reductions.
Elder Tom Walker preached on The Spirit Itself Beareth Witness With Our Spirits That We Are the Children of God during a Wednesday address. The series, ongoing since last Sunday, will conclude next Sunday night with J H Antwine of Bonham assisting in song. Tonight the sermon topic will be The Thief on the Cross.
Mr and Mrs J B Gates and daughter Miss Winnie of Shannon Clay county are in Vernon to make their home Gates recently purchased a home from Mrs M Stalcup and will continue to operate his ranch in Clay county
Bidding is keen for cotton in Vernon where prices paid reach 62 1/2 cents per pound for strict middling. Henry Karcher sold five bales this year, four strict middling and one good middling, totaling seven bales. R D Hart declined 32 1/2 cents and plans to hold for a higher market, with cotton coming in quickly despite recent rain. County Weigher I L Bryant has handled 324 bales.
Farmers with pure cotton varieties urged to contact County Agent N. R. Tisdal to arrange gin days where only that variety is processed. The plan aims to certify seed as pure and prevent mixing, especially for Acala and Lone Star seed. Wilbarger county planted about 300 bushels of one variety and 1,000 of the other. rains washed out much long staple, reducing overall output.
John Lloyd McLarty, son of Mr and Mrs S W McLarty, has returned after fifteen months in the U S Navy. He served on the transport Aeolius with Atlantic crossings and spent a week in Paris observing the war devastated areas. He notes long rehabilitation ahead and priceless losses. He is now in the Naval reserve and would be recalled if needed.
Wichita Falls Electra Iowa Park and Burkburnett are under an embargo by Fort Worth and Denver under an order from Robert Rice, Colorado Southern general manager. Conflicting reports say which freight is affected, G H Wheeler believes lumber and oil well supplies only. Freight may be shipped under permits.
A Vernon Hornet issue from February 1, 1940s reproduces BE C Nycum advertising steak at three pounds for 25 cents or four pounds of roast for 25 cents. The note compares to current cattle prices and cites old timers claiming higher prices in the 1870s.
Arthur Nunn and Vera Kirkpatrick wed in a county clerk office at 2 pm Sunday. Pastor W T Rouse of First Baptist Church officiated. The couple will reside in the Red Bluff community and receive many congratulations.
Thomason buys the South Main street grocery from W. W. Wright and assumes control of the store. Wright takes over Thomason’s trucks to begin a hauling business.
McKibbin elected president of the Wilbarger Cotton Association with S H Johnson as temporary secretary. Directors include Cy Long J A Prekett J A Dixon and others. Club day designated at the Wilbarger County Fair with free admission for agricultural clubs. Free trips and multiple scholarships announced for county boys and girls in Dallas and state fairs.
Bourland Consolidated school will start its 1919-20 session next Monday with Mrs. Gertrude Jones as principal and assistants Miss Pauline Ramsey and Miss Mattie Carney. The Antelope school may also open that day but no definite announcement has been made.
The Missionary Ruths will meet Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. Tromer Rogers as hostess. The meeting begins at 4:20 PM. It is a business meeting and a social gathering, and friends are invited.
McFall Bros report sale of a Dodge touring car to R. Waggoner of the Waggoner Colony country.
A twelve inch ad in Friday's record sold two automobiles for Smith Auto Sales Company. A Buick and a Dert were sold. Lewis, local manager, sold two other cars Saturday Hew Cohunias. Dewis credited the ad and praised The Record as a fine paper.
Beginning Wednesday October 17 taxes for 1920 will be receivable at the county tax collectors offices. Taxes payable until February 1 but owners urged to pay early to avoid January rush. County Collector C M Blair cites extra duties from new registrations and urges timely payment. He warns selling second hand cars without endorsed certificate of registration is illegal and essential to pass with transfers.
Willie Lewis Smith was found guilty of forgery and given five years in the penitentiary with a suspended sentence. Robert Moore, a juvenile, received a suspended five year term in the State Reform School at Clatesville. Civil cases are being tried this week.
An airplane carrying locals will headline next week's County Fair with flying demonstrations by J. Pouhetome and a world series baseball report daily on a big bulletin board supplied by The Vernon Record. The event includes forty fast Oklahoma Texas horses, auto and relay races, and notable agricultural exhibits.
Frank Terrell married Misa Vera Fitzgerald in Haskell at 8 AM Tuesday. Ceremony at the Fitzgerald home conducted by J P Patterson. The couple will reside with J N Johnson on South Deaf Lumpth Street. Terrell employed by Ver kin s Timberlake Company and nephew of L D Terrell.
Salvation Army workers and associates in Vernon plan a relief drive starting Monday morning at 9 o clock from the courthouse square. County chairman A B Davis led a meeting at the Library building to set a fundraising goal well above the $3 000 county quota. The effort will include bonnets tambourines and solicitors carrying bank checks and lists of prospects with wives urged to meet committees in the residence district. The group aims to complete the campaign at the county fair grounds by Friday and Saturday if possible.
The Wilbarger County Fair asks farmers to deliver exhibits by 10 a.m. next Wednesday. Agricultural heads Lon Byara and W. C. Orr with assistants will be at the fair grounds Tuesday to aid entry. obtain the catalogue from fair manager Dr. H. Coffee and ensure displays meet all rules to avoid prize loss.
L. J. Massie returns to Vernon after years in Long Beach California arriving next week. He bought the Nichola residence on West Texas street for seven thousand dollars and plans a modern home on the lot in the future.
State Inspector H B Savage visited Vernon to warn merchants about empty boxes creating fire hazards. He said removing the boxes could prevent higher fire insurance rates and urged coop eration to keep alleys and stores clear of hazards.
The sheriff warns motorists to protect vehicles and belongings during the County Fair, predicting possible car thefts in Witharger county. He cautions residents and asks for cooperation to prevent thefts and notes past petty crimes by some locals.
