Lockett gin destroyed by fire on Wednesday
The Lockett gin owned by Aubrey L. Lockett was totally destroyed by a Wednesday afternoon fire of undetermined origin. Loss estimates run from 45 000 to 50 000 with most cotton fully insured. 45 bales of cotton and several other damages reported. Vernon fire department aided the scene and saved some cotton stored on the yard. Officials expect rebuilding could take until December 7, leaving farmers to ship cotton to other gins in the county.

Vernon band leader Robert Reed dies suddenly
Robert Reed, director of the Vernon band, died Wednesday afternoon after a kidney attack. Funeral services were held at the Underwood parlors with Rev. Moore and Rev. Kepp officiating. Interment was in East View Cemetery. Reed, 44, born in Edom, leaves a father and three brothers and two sisters. The Gold Medal Band from Memphis sent condolences, and Reed was noted for building a strong musical group despite poor health.
