Material delays push Vernon street paving to January first

Delay stems from slow rock delivery by quarrymen. RoE Standifer notes only thirteen carloads of rock received since August, needing about 450 carloads with fifty tons per car. Transportation and quarry supply issues stall construction while city and company crews advance grading work on Paradise, Wilbarger, and East Wilbarger streets to weather the season.

Farmer Alvin Tiroff Praises Lone Star Seed

Alvin Tiroff of four and a half miles west was in town Monday with a bale of cotton. He reports three quarters of a bale per acre and is pleased with Lone Star seed planted last spring. He plans to use the same seed next year.

Tyler Minister to Accept Call Here

Rev. John T. Bradbury of Tyler will accept a call from the Central Christian Church of Vernon. His visit and remarks at Vernon church attracted many friends. Arrival date not set, but he will come as soon as arrangements at Tyler are completed. Vernon church plans larger activity with his coming after months without a pastor.

Texans urged quick funds for Carlsbad tubercular hospital

State Health Officer Dr. C. W. Goddard appeals to Texans for rapid donations to build hospital buildings at Carlsbad for Texas soldiers with tuberculosis. He notes pledges on day one exceeded 200000, urges reaching 500000 total, cites urgent needs as 4000 Texas soldiers are ill and 200 require immediate hospital care, and says federal aid will cover maintenance once built.

President of Smith Auto Sales dies suddenly

Be. J. Smith, president of Smith Auto Sales Company, died Sunday morning at his home in Wichita Falls. The Vernon office will close all day Wednesday out of respect. Funeral will be held in Wichita Falls for the prominent auto dealer who led two Wichita Falls locations plus stores in Little Rock and Vernon.

Fargo Epworth League Entertainment at Schoolhouse

Vernonites Take to the Skies in Republic Truck Plane

More than sixty Vernon residents enjoyed weekend flights as the Republic Truck aircraft offered rides, pilots busy on Sunday and Monday, with riders inspired by the view of town and farms from above. The wind shifted the field location, and many locals claimed the experience was the best cure for a big head.

Fourteen Vernon firms joined the West Texas Chamber of Commerce with total new memberships from Kell Milling Company Herving National and Was voner National Banks Farmers State Bank and others. The group will elect a director and assist Vernon in attracting new industries and solving city county problems. Vernon Grocery Company to Open on West Pease Street

D. M. Ferebee, eight years in Clarendon groceries, with D. D. Jackson and F. E. Rogers, prepares to open Vernon Grocery Company in the former Trevathan Hettie building on West Pease. The new store will stock staple and fancy groceries. Ferebee and Jackson will run it after fixtures are installed and stock arrives.

Paving Bonds Approved by City Officials

The attorney general's department in Austin has officially approved two bonds for the city: a $15,000 paving bond and a $10,080 water extension bond. Printing of the bonds will begin immediately, according to city hall.

Minister Will Be Here Sunday for Vernon Church

A telegram from Rev. E R Barcus says he will arrive this week and occupy the pulpit at the First Methodist Church Vernon Sunday. Barcus is at Tyler in the Central Texas Conference. His brother Rev John M Barcus was formerly a pastor here and later a presiding elder in this district.

Safe Cracker Strikes Tolbert Store For 50 Dollars

Sheriff Ish says the Tolbert W T Dass grocery safe was blown with glycerin late at night and rifled of about 40 dollars cash plus a pistol and books. The blast left sleepers in distance with no sound heard. Police have few clues as to the identity of the criminal. This marks the third robbery at the store since April, with explosives used for the first time.

Arizona man visits Vernon sees improvements

Former citizen J. M. Collier of Tempe Arizona is in Vernon for a week. He moved to Arizona a little over a year ago and says that state is in fine condition. Collier notes Vernon has progressed with several improvements during his absence.

Vernon Union Thanksgiving Service Planned by Local Pastors

Vernon residents are urged to attend a Union Thanksgiving Service at Central Christian Church on East Wilbarger Street. Rev W P Trouse of First Baptist will preach, Rev Gains Bo Hall reads President Wilson’s proclamation, scriphare will be sent by Bilder Pot Walker, with prayers by local parents. Benediction expected around 11 20 oclock. The pastor urges universal attendance to give thanks amid crop failures and storms, hoping for a record turnout.

Home Science Club Holds Meeting With Mrs Parnell

The Home Science club met with Mrs J D Parnell and J C Smith for its regular session. A business meeting was followed by a musical program by Mrs Parnell and J B Fisher. A two course turkey dinner was served. Mrs Parnell will host the club at South Main Street on the second Friday in December.

Property Owners Petition to Extend Paving on South Main

Property owners along both sides of South Main street petition Vernon city officials to extend the paving contract four blocks south to Gordon street and to extend city sewerage to the same area. About 90 percent of affected owners have signed, led by James who circulated the petition. Signers include J. R.
