Open Shop Plans To Start School In Southwest
At a Southwest Open Shop meeting in Dalles plans were formed for an open shop trades school in the southwest. The school aims to train workers rather than displacing current employees, starting with crafts like carpentry plumbing and steam fitting and expanding to other trades. It will be free and funded by a drive to cover operating costs, with applicants from across the country and work-study options to cover expenses. H L Coleman of Vernon was elected to the three year board term. The piece notes a wartime surge in paper salvage interest amid a continuing paper shortage.
