Vernon High School closes its year with a service at the Methodist church tonight starting after 8 o clock. Vernon High School Addition Contract Granted

Wichita Falls contractor M Bialkowski will erect the Vernon high school addition for 15500, to include six rooms a study hall auditorium and updated heating. Work starts now with occupancy planned by September 1. The board also elected Miss Florence Womack to replace Miss Faye Baird in government work.

Local Red Cross Drives Raise Funds Across City

The Red Cross in this area collected 398.70 led by a 160 donation from the Thrift Day parade sheet. A flag in the patriotic parade yielded 15 and stamps were donated. Weekly bank totals included 5.50 at Swartwood and 1.00 at Massie Shire. The Tuesday Club contributed 45 and the Thrift Friday booth brought 114.64. Robert Schultz gave 85 and Mrs. Huggins urges finance committee support for next week’s national drive.

Vernon carpenters invest half day earnings in Thrift Stamps

Four Vernon carpenters debated patriotism by taking half a holiday or driving nails. They chose thrift over leisure, rushing to a Thrift Stamp booth after work to invest their earnings. W E Clark and D S Dery bought 2.50 dollars worth, W L Strickland 2 dollars, and W B Derr 4.75 dollars.

Dawson Valley Leads Red Cross Drive in Wilbarger County

Dawson Valley becomes the first Wilbarger County community to meet its Red Cross quota, oversubscribing by two thirds. At a box supper funds reached 504 with 473 from boxes and 31 from cold drinks. A. M. Bourland led the district as chairman and bids were taken by J. L. Par nell and W. A. Atchison.

Minister Linton Lockhart to Preach at Central Christian

Dev Linton Lockhart of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth will preach at Central Christian Church Sunday morning and night. Dev Ben M. Elder W. P. Skaggs of Tom Bean Texas preached at the Church of Christ last night. Hider Skaggs, formerly of Vernon, paused on his way home from Miami and noted Vernon’s marked progress since his last visit two years ago.

Denver Officials Inspect Vernon on Route Tour

Vice President Do BL Keeler and assistant O M Colston with W EF Sterley visited Vernon Tuesday afternoon. They inspected Records plant and noted heavy traffic plus rain in the Wichita Falls Fort Worth line. Bank deposits were about 1 percent higher than February last call, loans remain heavy. They discussed depot consolidations with Gov and operating departments as a step toward efficiency.

Missionary Society TQ Meet At Mrs Prack Murchison

The Young Ladies Missionary Society of the Methodist church will meet at 4 PM with Mrs. Prack Murchison for a devotional service. Miss Flora Lowrey will speak on Draver, the Highest Service. Readings and music by several performers accompany the program. All young women of the church are invited.

City Commission Cancels Bonds and Advances Street Paving

The city commission cancelled bonds totaling 6500 and moved to ease taxation by accepting Liberty Bonds for delinquent taxes. It approved paving Pease Street from Main to Fannin and Texas Street section at 210 per square yard with one nonresident objector. May 20 22 board of equalization dates set. Allowance of 254 per month to Allow Park from June 1, park donations to Altineham and Shire continue.

War Stamp Meeting Set for Wichita Falls Saturday

Louis Lipsitz state War Savings director and two National Committee reps from Washington will convene in Wichita Falls Saturday. Local leaders Mrs C J Barrell and IL Massie, Wilbarger county chairs, urged district chairmen to attend and implement a plan to ensure every community sells its full War Savings Stamp quota.

Byrd Ordered to Report for Training at Austin

Vernon business leader Lewis J. Byrd is summoned to report May 25 to the School of Military Aeronautics in Austin to begin training as a United States Army Air Corps flyer. He is a member of the T. H. Shine Motor Company and is noted as a prominent young businessman. Byrd previously passed the flight examination and awaited the call.

Quanah Defeats Vernon in 8–2 Baseball Win

Quanah defeated Vernon 8 to 2 after a Tuesday afternoon game. Home lineup included R. Berry catcher, Sam Gaun and Sam Bourland pitchers, with Lutzth, Sneed, Holmes, Murchison, Howell, Ladd and Teel in the field. The club unveiled new uniforms featuring a red cross on one sleeve and a V on the other.
