The Wilbarger County Girls Camp at Alingtam Park opens with about 75 attendees under Miss Bula Goodfellow and Miss M N Hayden guiding sessions in natural history, bird eggs, and plant plant visits. The two day program includes millinery, hatmaking, crafts, a hike, poultry, egg marketing, and games led by named organizers.

Vandiver Found Dead in Fort Worth With Bullet Wound

Word % 18 Bony received here of the death of Vandiver in Fort Worth recently. Notice published in the Star Telegram stated he was found with a bullet hole in his head. There was no intimation of murder. Vandiver was employed last year by J. PD. Robinson and me in this city and had many friends here.

George Kelly names cartoon winner for Star Telegram prize

George Kelly, the contest winner chosen to name a Sunday cartoon in the Star Telegram, received a $10 prize. The scene shows a gospel minister and a citizen with suitcases. liquid pours from a suitcase, and Kelly dubbed the cartoon A Winner of Souls and a Loser of Spirits.

Plan for nationwide private electric system advanced

Plans under way for a huge unified private electrical system to power the country. Backed by Westinghouse Electric Company, with Guy E. Tripp as chairman admitting the effort. The plan would cost about five billion dollars with annual electricity costs rising by about a billion, and could electrify all steam railroads, though engineer Frank Banin of San Francisco says the idea has moved beyond theory.

Scoutmaster G L Taylor says a Boy Scout troop already exists in Vernon and he expects to form another troop next Tuesday night. He forwards a message praising local newspaper support and urging parents to back the Scouts as a force to build character and citizenship rather to train for war.

Sheriff Holds Man Wanted in Oklahoma for Escaping Prison

Albert Fore, a young white man arrested for burglary, is wanted in Granite Oklahoma after escaping from the state reformatory. He was serving a two year term but escaped after a few weeks. Fore was out on bond locally when the notice arrived and was re-arrested. He is being held until Oklahoma officers arrive.

The Vernon County Chamber of Commerce week of meetings continued with growing memberships and planned outreach across towns. Captain Nusbaum spoke in multiple communities with the King Tri club aiding with songs and stunts as bands played to boost farmer and town engagement.

Lightning strikes wire ignite home blaze in city

Lightning severed an electric wire and sent fire onto the roof of J. M. Underwood's home at 127 South Pearl Street just after 4 am Wednesday. Firemen extinguished the blaze before major damage. the strike also blew fuses in many houses and disrupted telephones and communications in the area.

South Main Street Pave Plan Nears Full Approval

Five blocks on South Main Street are close to being paved as residents on three blocks have signed up. ASpecial committee works to gather signatures from all property owners along the five blocks. The city will perform the work with owners paying their share, aiming to extend paving to the city limits.

Drilling Resumes on McCaleb Well Monday

The Tidal Oil Company will start drilling McCaleb Well No 1 at Wim McCaleb place near Doana on Monday morning. The drill stem and new cable arrived midweek and the crew is ready. the well, idle for about two years, is now 1000 feet deep and has undergone two months of repairs with officials in Vernon completing arrangements.

Mr and Mrs B Fields and daughter Lorenn visited Vernon after 14 years away, touring Tipton Frederick Grandfield Okla regions and San Angelo. He praised Vernon’s growth noting that no paving existed when he left and Main street white way had yet to exist. He called Vernon a thing of beauty due to progress, paving, and trees.
