The King Tut Club, Vernon’s booster group, staged a short notice parade to back the Chamber of Commerce campaign. A live King Tut figure rode the track, praising Vernon and urging residents to unite and boost the town with stunts and a Mardi Gras night to enliven the community.
Vernon high school students gain national notice as Bill board highlights their May 15 Vernon Theatre performance of Booth Tarkington's Clarence. The large crowd required chairs from nearby businesses and City Hall, with Pendleton directing a praised farce.
Oklaunion men in Canyon Joseph A. Blevins accompanied by White principal of the Okla union school left Monday for Canyon to attend the West Texas State Normal.
Former Supreme Court Justice John H. Clarke warned of a looming world war in Youngstown Ohio and urged young men to mobilize the nation for peace. He said war could come in three or ten years but is inevitable, and that 3 to 4 million Americans must organize for peace to force a national movement unseen in the world.
Members and families of the Presbyterian Guild plan a Monday afternoon picnic at Allingham Park. Arrival time not announced. all are invited to attend and enjoy basket lunches.
President Harding praised the Lee Highway officials and workers at the Zero monument unveiling in Washington for advancing one of the nation’s great highway projects. He highlighted benefits for towns along the route and the country, noting Vernon and nearby residents will soon vote on building the highway, expected to be among the first big national roads completed.
Tess Pugh recalls Jess Pugh once the most popular local entertainer near Kansas City now living in New York. He travels for Chautauqua circuits with Redpath and is in constant demand. Summers are devoted to Chautauqua work and he will open the boys’ series, drawing praise from audiences who remember his past impact.
Wilbarger County reports a 92 percent tax collection rate for the period April 1 1929 to March 3 1930, close to last year’s 98 percent and above the state average. Mrs Blair notes county taxes 880,068. roads 56,017.16. schools 58,507.58. delinquent real estate 4,428.25. delinquent road 100.85. delinquent personal 467.97. delinquent personal road 100.20. state taxes charged 134,159.04 with 121,046 collected.
Deputy sheriffs and city marshal raided near Beaver Creek by the South Electra Oil field and captured six men with 2100 gallons of mash, two large 100 gallon stills, and other equipment. Four men were arrested, with two more found fleeing, as authorities reported the largest mash seizure in Texas in months and recovered items from a recent residence theft. Those jailed include Fred Fugit Pete Peterson Clyde Grinsley Leon Baker Sam Flanery and J D King.
Responses from Wilbarger county club girls pour in for a June encampment at Altinghaim Park on June 1 and 16. Miss Bata Goodfellow will lead the camp, promising recreation and instruction with events planned, including a swimming party at the new city lake.
The Clarendon College Quartet performed last night under the Young People’s Missionary Society of the Methodist church. Encores were given and a neat sum was realized from ticket sales for the recital.
County schools are set to improve facilities this year with plans for a brick school building costing 15000 dollars if voters approve the bond issue. Superintendent L A Hollar says rear schools will be in better condition next term despite prior commendations from Austin. He notes teachers are being contracted for almost all schools and a splendid group is being obtained.
Frank Delmasso and Esker Curtis are home from Abilene where they attended Abilene Christian College during the past term.
Presbyterian congregation Vernon Theatre hosts a Sunday service and a men’s meeting at the Pic torium. The Call for Men in the Community promotes participation at 8 pm. First Methodist Church features a sermon on The life of Christ in the Community.
Wilbarger County stock judging teams depart for Childress to compete in district contest. County farm agent P. D. Chaney and Prof. Glavener of Oklahoma plus M. L. Sharp trained the boys. Jim Hughes is replaced by Thomas Chapman. Team 1 includes Vaughn, Green, Walker, Haney. Team 2 includes Chapman, Cabe, Capehart, Hunusz.
Reports describe a severe Thursday sandstorm across Wilbarger and Knox counties causing extensive cotton crop damage. J D Summerour received word that sandy land cotton in Knox County was almost totally destroyed, with thousands of acres affected and replanting expected.
Vernon’s Chamber of Commerce efforts led by Bruce Gibson and George Veteto reported about 400 memberships signed in the first round. The drive continues through the weekend with Nusbaum as speaker and community support strong across businesses and citizens.
A steady stream of tourists travels along the Colorado Gulf highway toward the West with five to twenty automobile loads daily. Some camp at tourist camps, others stay in local hotels, and many push on. The season is starting earlier than usual and is expected to make the highway a popular route in the United States.
Funeral services were conducted this afternoon at 4 o'clock at East View cemetery for Arthur Anderson who was killed Sunday morning at Blythe California when crushed by a tractor. Rev. Thomas B.E. Milholland, pastor of the Church of Christ, officiated. Anderson had resided in the county for 35 years.
The City Commission will consider a bond issue of 110000 for a modernized school building. An election is planned for mid July. Mayor Harry Mason, returning from Austin, aims to offer bonds at par with accrued interest and cover printing and related expenses without raising taxes or valuations.
The John Tarleton College Band gave a concert on the public square here on Wednesday night as part of a state tour. The band, among the best in the state, drew hundreds from Vernon, traveling in two large automobile trucks as they promote their college during a 1000 mile tour. Members were hosted in Vernon homes during their stay.
Vernon High School alumnus has been appointed sales manager of the McQuay-Norris Manufacturing Company with headquarters in St. Louis and a salary of 7500 dollars per year. The promotion occurred at a spring conference in St. Louis attended by seventeen branch managers, reflecting a career spanning Southwestern management in Dallas, Texas, and regional duties in Indiana and Missouri.
Mrs CM Blair announces Jernice Clayton of A and M College will judge the county competition next week. Eight Wilbarger women entered the contest.
