Ceremonies marked the groundbreaking for Vernon’s new First Presbyterian Church at Wilharger and Trouston streets. The $35,000 structure replaces the old 1892 building. Chys New Engine Powers City Lighting and Water Pump
The city activated a 100 horsepower Fairbanks Morse engine to light streets and supply pumping power. When the lake pump is installed the engine will push water from the reserve supply for peak demand. Officials say the system eliminates water shortages during hot afternoons as tanks at the city lake fill and feed the line. The old engine remains as reserve power for city needs.

Local Oil Mill Man Catches Stingray at Galveston
A. Kressenberg, superintendent of the Vernon Cotton Oil Mill, returned from Houston for the Cotton oil mill superintendents convention and paused in Galveston for salt water fishing. On a sunny day after two weeks of poor weather he caught fish including a large stingray, a noted salt water threat due to its tail barb. The trip was described as pleasant with many cotton oil men present from the South.

Robbers Enter Store at Oklaunion Take $100 in Merchandise
The Clyde Brite store at Oklaunion was robbed Tuesday night, with about $100 of merchandise stolen. Entry was gained by forcing a rear door, and officers trailed the robbers into the Electra Oil Field wheel before losing them. The loot was mainly clothing.

Local Woman Fights Arrest After Rainy Night Stop
Two local officers faced stiff opposition during a rain night arrest on a paved road. A man and a woman resisted as the car driver, both charged with being drunk, were subdued after the officers received several scratches. All three were fined $25 and costs in county court.

Vernon youths wreck old Presbyterian church in days
About fifty Vernon children aged ten to five joined in wrecking the old Presbyterian church this week to clear space for a new one. Contractors paid by the brick cleaning and left the task to the boys, completing the job in under three days. Mark Lindsey of Wichita Falls, formerly Eldorado Ark, is visiting friends.
