Barrow district agent for the government praised Wilharrer county for progress on a proposed 1 500 000 road improvement bond issue. He urged that good roads boost farm values, attract eastern investors, lower marketing costs, and keep rural property profitable even with rain.
Andrew, a member of Company I, 42nd Infantry, returned Saturday after overseas service. He was gassed during a top assault on the Champagne front and spent two and a half months in the hospital. He describes being knocked down six times by shell concussions while returning to aid his gas mask, with a shell burst that hurled him thirty feet in the air.
Mrs M R Sewell treated the church choir to a pleasant surprise Friday night. She invited the choir to meet at her home for practice, and after singing refreshments were served. About twenty members attended and enjoyed a social evening.
Julian Place near East View Cemetery reports say Shivers underwent an appendectomy last Friday. Late word states he is recovering well with Art Shivers living nearby.
The post office will relocate from East Wilharger Street to the new Federal Building on 1st Texas Street after six o clock Saturday night. Postmaster Brownsend announces the transfer aims to streamline mail handling with a modern, heated building and new lock boxes.
At a congregational gathering the First Baptist Church voted to hold a series of meetings starting the first Sunday in July. The pastor was asked to preach and to recruit a music leader for the revival.
Friends regret to learn that J. W. Ladd is in critical condition with physicians not hopeful he will live through the day. Reports were received at 11 50 this morning.
County engineer John Nabors reports the Vernon road project will finish this week weather permitting. Crews using twenty teams and about twenty men will complete concrete work and grading before spring paving, with bids opened for paving contracts next Tuesday.
N Visdal urges boys to grow Lone Star cotton seed for seed stock and seed distribution. Wilbarger county plans demonstrations with A M College aid and local representatives to teach proper planting and field practices. Seed handled at cost by Bankers Association at 4.25 per bushel F O B.
Perkins Timberlake Company announces plans to open a larger department store in Wichita Falls. A site of 11 by 15 feet has been acquired at Ninth Street and Scott Avenue. The new two to three story building will provide increased floor space and add jobs as the firm operates twenty five Texas and Oklahoma stores.
Mayor Harry Mason declares a hard line after repeated warnings. He says dogs roaming streets are criminal, orders officers to seize and destroy loose animals and to fine owners who let pets run free.
Taylor Nichols, once with Wells Fargo in Vernon, was commissioned as an officer in the Field Signal Corps after training with the 86th Division. He went overseas, saw active service, and served mainly in an officers' training school while the 36th Division fought. He received his commission on November 11, the armistice day.
Six dyed boys and 50 girls compete in local contests under Boys and girls clubs with U S Department of Education support. Winners earn four days at the State Fair with campus scholarships at two Texas institutions.
J. T. Squires formerly of Vernon is named deputy commissioner of banking by George Waverly Dries, state commissioner of banking and insurance. Squires had been a state bank examiner, lived in Vernon, moved to Dallas district, later became vice president of the Moranora State Bank at Barkburnett, resigned recently. He is the son of Dr. J B. Dodge of this city.
Udley Miller, recently discharged from the Medical Corps with a silver star, arrived in Pribran Camp Travis after receiving his honor. He signaled a light rank with three vice stripes. Miller, once with Bo & Wy Cruz, joined a first draft contingent and left yesterday for Dallas to take a position at Oak Cliff Pharmacy.
Wayne Tielwes arrived Saturday from San Pateisean to spend a ten day furlough with his parents Rey Mis and TE Holmes on West Paradise Street. Holmes was a clerk at the local post office before enlisting in the navy. He is a first class petty officer and does not know when he will be discharged.
Deputy County Collector Rob Parr stuck two nineteen penny nails in his left foot while Friday. The nails pierced about two inches at the arch, causing pain but not expected to cause serious injury. He hopes for quick recovery.
Wilbarger County faces an active oil test year with multiple drilling plans. Companies including Newell Kerr & Watterson and Great Western Oil pursue deep tests near Vernon and Odell.
