Harrold road paving contract awarded to low bidder

J P Foty Construction Company won the Harrold district paving project for 5.2 miles of eighteen foot reinforced concrete highway from the Wichita County line through Harrold. Bids ranged with Foty’s at about 1000 per mile cheaper than the next, and officials expect start after State Highway Department approval and bond details.

Vernon Challenges Cisco for West Texas Title

Vernon issues a challenge to Cisco school authorities to play for the West Texas championship either at Vernon or Wichita Falls on Christmas Day. Both towns beat West Texas opponents while Oak Cliff routed Cisco, which has not replied to the challenge and may ignore it.

Vernon High School awards eighteen football letters

Eighteen members of the 1924 Vernon High School football team received letters at chapel, presented by Principal Z A Williamson after services by Rev. EB Moore. Recipients include captain Hugh Bourland and others for practice regularity, conduct, and athletic scholastic service. Sweaters for the eighteen will be handed when they arrive.

Two Young Women Hurt Sunday In Collision

Miss Lacey Bomar daughter of city marshal Jim Bomar was badly hurt Sunday afternoon around 6 30 when her car hit another driven by Barney Riley on Wilbarger Street. She suffered three broken ribs and a sprained wrist while Miss Edna Puckett a passenger in Bomars car sustained injuries to her body. The other driver Mr Tiley was uninjured.

Mrs. Jesse Martin is hospitalized recovering from injuries after being struck by a truck. A previous report incorrectly named Sewell Grain and Fuel Company as the vehicle owner.

Wilbarger County to gain funds from new tax plan

A proposed Dallas conference highway law would shift local automobile taxes to Wilbarger County, boosting funds for lateral roads. With 4 000 to 5 000 expected registrations annually, county revenue could rise to about 11 000 to 15 000 dollars for road work, while state highways remain under state control.

Trash fire prompts quick fire department run

The local fire department responded to an alarm Monday around 8 PM after trash in the rear of Mrs. M. L. Carrin's Olive Street residence caught fire. No damage was reported.

Vernon Vernon Electric Line To Serve Oklaunion

Vernon Electric and Tea Company surveys a high power line from Vernon to Oklaunion and aims to start construction soon. Patrons in Oklaunion and nearby farm homes along the Vernon Oklaunion highway are planned to receive service within about 30 days after work begins, with extensions to other towns being considered. A new ice plant on Cumberland Street is planned to open before summer 1925.

Teachers to Spend Christmas Visiting Fellow Staff

Welfare Drive To Aid Vernon Poor Starts Tomorrow

The Vernon Welfare Association launches a fundraising canvass with a goal of 2000 to aid the city’s poor. Committee members will meet at the Chamber of Commerce at 8 o clock tomorrow morning and begin door to door collection, accepting cash donations or goods such as clothing groceries coal or crockery to be sent to Dr F B J Moore president of the association.

Thalia Youth Dies After Weeklong Illness

James William Reeves age 15 of Thalia died early today after a weeklong illness. Funeral services will be held at Thalia Cemetery this afternoon at 4 o clock conducted by the local Baptist minister. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs S Reeves and six brothers and sisters.

Derrick Burns in South Field Fire Destroys Winnipes No 4d Bond

A derrick over the Winnipes No 4d Bond in the Ronth Veravin field burned early Monday. The cause is unknown and the extent of damage to the rig is not yet determined. Estimated value around 45 000 dollars, with parts covered by insurance. the well must be shut down and machinery secured.

Young Man Dies After Long Typhoid Siege

A young man son of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Baalers died at their Vernon county home southeast of Vornas after a long typhoid fever. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 PM from the home by Rev. LA Dilek ley of Vernon Methodist church. Interment was in Fast View cemetery. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. pallbearers were from the local canes. The family moved here from Mansfield, Warrant County. He had been living with the Milnes family for two years. Survivors include his parents six sisters and one brother. All were present at the funeral.

The Texhomt Oil and Ore Company plans a 2500 foot well on the W B Covert farm nine miles north of Vernon in section 7 block 16 Texas. Drilling will start before Christmas with standard tools as materials already on the ground. Miss Lawrence Reeves of Electra and Trouseant were married last night at 7 o clock at the Presbyterian church. The couple will reside in Electra.

An extension of the South Vernon pool in the Humble Company’s No. 1 BR L Castlebury well at 1300 feet shows heavy production in the Stephens sand. The well flowed after tests and was prepared for deeper testing toward 2000 feet to target heavier oil while other nearby wells report signs and potential at various depths.

Blaze at Blanton Gin Damages 12 Bales of Cotton

Fire at Blanton gin early Monday damaged twelve bales of cotton. The blaze started around 3 o'clock while bales rested on the platform awaiting hauling. Nine bales were severely damaged. three were moved by firefighters and lightly damaged. No one was present at the gin when the fire began.

Arrest Follows Auto Collision Near East View Cemetery

L W Youngblood of Davidson, Oita, suffered scalp wounds and a severe cheek cut while Miss Rube Thomas and her brother from Holliday were severely bruised in a two car crash on the pavement near East View cemetery Sunday afternoon. J Thomas and family were returning to Holliday from Vernon when their Ford sedan collided with an open model Ford driven toward Vernon by Chayford Pinus of Daysteen. Youngblood was on the front seat and ejected through the windshield. White and Thorne were only slightly shaken. Witnesses said the Thomas car was on the eastbound side. the other on the westbound side. Motorcycle Officer Oran Brewer arrested Timme for reckless driving and drunken driving. He remained jailed Sunday night on 8500 bond. driving while intoxicated is a felony under Texas law.
